Naru2u 2011 – Ottawa’s Anime Convention

Hello Hello! Took another opportunity to go to a local Anime con within the nation’s capital – Ottawa’s Naru2u Anime con. This one went from November 18th to 20th.

(All images taken swiftly with a Lumix GF1 – Pancake lens.)

Might as well take advantage of going to the con to see what is new with Ottawa’s Anime scene. All the forums are dead, nobody says much, and people are basically hiding in the shadows. The con might not be the best, but still took the chance to see what my fellow Ottawaians were up to.

Also nice to see nice cosplays in this “small” Anime con. Such cosplays made the con well worth going to.

Hmm….So I started my con off with taking a picture of Kenny giving me a hidden middle-finger? Lovely!

“OMG! You killed Kenny! You bastard!”

I personally think Naru2u should serious, and I do mean seriously look into getting “badges” to wear instead of these silly hospital type bracelets. If they have a fetish for such then they could always go with the Cuban plastic kinds :P. Use people’s fan-art for such? This is my main serious gripe with the con.

While waltzing around waiting and looking for cosplayers I noticed some Asian influences in the Travel Lodge’s courtyard. Might as well take advantage of it with my silly attention seeking Renge.

Also observed a cosplay photoshoot that I should of taken advantage of.

Day 2 – Saturday:

(Link – MySite)                                (Link – MySite)

(Link – MySite) – First thing that came to mind was “Ghost Nappa”. I blame you Twitter!

Also noticed a nicely set up Dollfie/Doll table waiting for Renge to participatein . A fellow figure.fm’er ended up posing and changing poses of both his two Dollfies and my Shinki Renge.

Bought Renge a lovely huggable pillow with Miku Append on it. From the looks of it I take it she likes it ha!

Wanted to get some Figmas I don’t have but damn…the prices! Cannot afford! Besides, I bought Fate/Extra, Figma Robocop, and Busou Shinki Archives (yet to review) recently so I can get away with only purchasing a pillow for my lovely Renge.

(Link – MySite) – Zzzzzzzzzz

(Link – MySite)

Kodama gifted me a lovely Danny Choo‘s Mirai (mascot) pin and allowed Renge to sip on some….dollfie scaled soda. The Soda being a….Super-sized Coke cup?

(Link – MySite)                               (Link – MySite)

I basically took turns changing Renge’s poses and scouting for more cosplayers to take images of. Don’t want to take images of only Renge, that would defeat the purpose of going to a con….

Me and Kodama were going on about brooms-of-doom and who would be who’s minion. I vote Renge having that cat Dollfie as her minion due to her bladed weapons, combat abilities, and her agility as a 15 cm tall battle robot.

Day three – Final:

(Link – MySite) – OP & ED guessing.

Just because you made my mind tingle when hearing Spice & Wolf OP, Yumekui Merry OP, and Deadman Wonderland OP I’ll share them here. Happy to hear something familiar. Now lets hope they don’t get pulled. Didn’t take videos, nor can I find any AMV’s from this year.

Not to be rude, and I do apologize if I am, but chubby/fat girls and Anime conventions don’t mix! Not stopping you, go! Just don’t scream our ears off.

*He says after nearly going deaf from sudden loud screaming twice.*

Geez! Take it easy! Naru2’s 2010 ending ceremony’s screaming was enough, having an encore is over-the-top! :P.

(Link – MySite) – Caramelldansen!

How was it? Fun for me, but over-all? I feel as if it was slightly pulled back. The game-room wasn’t as nicely set up (compared to 2010), and the bracelet as a pass is quite lazy. Make color-coded badges for crying out loud! Other than that? I had fun and the cosplayers made it well worth going to. The side stuff was somewhat entertaining.

I missed a few cosplayers on camera due to distractions, or bad timing, but I hope you can fill me in on those in the comments? Thanks in advance? No? Your call.

Will I go back next year? We’ll see. Now onto the real fun! GAnime 2012! Be nice if I could go back to Otakuthon. Until then, peace!

Alot of unidentifiable cosplay on this end… is that a guy in his boxers?!

Anyhow, it looked pretty wild, and interesting at the same time.

I ended up preferring the courtyard pictures though, did you get any more of it?

Anyhow, hope you had a good time. (Who knows right?)

PS – Hope your ears are okay, (Looking at the pictures, there’s alot of chubby/fat girls or so there. No offence meant to anyone there… no, that’s going to come off as offensive anyways… Sorry.”

@Ankiseth: I know most of them. The boxer person is from the PS3 game called Cathrine, which I need to try out…I think there is a demo? Maybe we should try that.

I wish I did, but I didn’t. I hesitated, which is quite bad when you need great shots….Bah! Glad you like the courtyard ones. Yup, did have fun thanks to the Saturday meet-up.

My ears are fine. And ya, not wanting to be rude but one kept being quite….loud. All is good in the end, I hope :).

There was an amv contest? Lol remember some of the entries?

Good thing the end ceremony was cleaner.

  • ArcticKitsune says:

@Oboro: Yup, on Saturday at 7 pm. It was even listed on the schedule. Just one or two. And yup, cleaner and a bit longer with Naru acting like a nut lol.

  • Persocom says:

Looks like you had a bit of fun at least. Don’t recognize many of the cosplayers, but they still look good. Seems like Renge got quite a bit of attention this time, and even found herself another minion :P That’s a cool Miku Append pillow too. So how badly marked up were the Figma prices?

  • Aleena says:

I was the Lady Rainicorn! (in the photo with the boxers guy and the Rainbow Dash) I love your photos! Do you mind if I post that photo on my facebook page? It’s such a great photo and I would really like to share it with my friends and family.

    November 21, 2011 at 9:22 pm
  • ArcticKitsune says:

@Persocom: That I did, even more so when hanging around Persocom. Ha! Ya, Renge got quite a bit of attention actually. Was told that people were taking images of her when I was doing my scouting runs. As for the marked up prices? I think they went up another $10 since when I first got Figma Haruhi. They’re gradually getting more and more expensive :(.

@Aleena: Nice. Glad that you like my images. I’m also glad that shot came out nicely because I took that shot somewhat blindly. I couldn’t see half the screen. Feel free to to use it. :)

“the bracelet as a pass” <.> Wasn’t meant to derail your lovely report on Naru2U 2011. Which actually is a pretty cool sounding name XD

    November 22, 2011 at 6:52 pm
  • NaitoNii says:

Hmm. Seems things went wrong with my first reply. So let’s try it again.

“the bracelet as a pass” it’s annoying. Get Badges. Pour in a little more of your budget in making them. Badges can look great in a scrapbook. Well, so do the bracelets, but Badges makes me feel more awesome rather than an escaped patient from a hospital :P

The pictures you took were great. I really love the variety between all the cosplays. At the con I went to last weekend, Hetalia dominated. It’s starting to annoy me. Almost every con down here has either: Hetalia or Black Butler times 100. I wish people were more original in their costumes.

I take my hat off to the lady with green hair in tiger striped bikini. She actually wears nothing but the bikini. Down here they sometimes were something of a spandex like material that looks like a second skin. She actually doesn’t. Which I find commendable.
It’s fun to see you bringing along Renge for pictures at a con. I wouldn’t do that. It’s great you got that Soi-Fon cosplayer to pose with Renge. It makes it so much more special <3
The CaramellDansen <3 I love that. To bad they all seemingly decided down here to never do it anymore at cons. Since it's "overdone" but a 100 Sebastians, Ciels or Hetalia characters isnt.. Odd XD

    November 22, 2011 at 7:01 pm
  • ArcticKitsune says:

@Naito: Ah well, bad things happen lol. I got the paper bracelet patient comment from a friend as well, hmm. Ya, I badges are the proper way to go, even if budget is lacking.

Awesome, glad you like my pics as well. Variety ftw, and one of the reasons why Naru2u was fun twice.
Ha! Agreed. I was told she was BRS the year before. She later changed into a Squirrel with an orange Dragonball Z shirt later. Props to her indeed :).
You should! Take your Benio with you and see what you get yourself into haha. Well worth it! Renge made things more interesting for me.
Logic tends to get twisted :P.

  • Nopy says:

One of the advantages of small cons is that you don’t get pushed all over the place by crowds of people. I can’t believe that someone cosplayed as Lum, that’s so retro.

    November 24, 2011 at 11:35 pm
  • ArcticKitsune says:

@Nopy: Yet people still try piling up in one area blocking the main path from one direction to the next haha. but ya, you do have a nice point. Ha! Lum cosplay ftw! Surprising and refreshing to see that people still cosplay as retro characters.
